281 to 293 Hedon Road - Shops

  Top is a section from the 1928 map.  The shops must have been demolished or bombed during the War.  The building next to Woodhouse Street was the Alexandra Club which I knew as the Old Pub.  We used to play in the empty building before it was burned down in the late 50s 0r early 60s.  

 

  281 - 283 From at least 1926 till the War this was Rosenston and Hyman Outfitters.

 

 
  285 In 1926 this is registered as John Uttley Chemists.  It remained so in 1929.  By 1936 it was still a chemists but under T Jones.

 

 
  287 1926 - 1929 was John Walker Boot and Shoe Dealer.  In 1936 no one is registered here.

 

 
  289 From 1926 to 1936 it is registered as George Barker Pawnbrokers

 

 
  291 1926 to 1929 Alfred Purkins Tobacconists but also Post Money Order and Telegraph Office.  By 1936 the tobacconists was Alfred Peacock.  It remained the Telegraph Office.

 

 
  293 Listed from 1926 to 1936 as T Linsley Grocers.  But Alexandra Workingmen's Club listed as such in 1954.re
