FOREWORD

A couple of months ago I received an e-mail from Steve Rudd asking for information about the Crowle Street area of Hull in the 50s and 60s.  Very soon we were exchanging ideas about trying to reconstruct, through photographs and memories, what it was like then.

We felt that memories were fading and information is being lost.  At the very least we thought it necessary to preserve what we could about the area we were brought up in and loved through those rose tinted glasses.

We also realised that very little had been produced in print or electronically about East Hull and in particular Hedon Road.  Steve is involved in publishing and I teach ICT.  A not for profit making web site seemed a good idea so here we go !!

To start with we decided to use free web space on Geocities with all its problems of advertisements, error messages, limited space, etc.  Eventually purchasing 500 Mb of web space rid the site of these annoyances.

We also realised that not all browsers could see the more advanced facilities, hence this very simple site.  Furthermore, we are both around 50 so most, from the area, are older than us and perhaps not used to the internet.

We purchased the domain name www.crowlestreetkids.co.uk after some thought and eventually www.crowlestreetkids.com.  It's about the Hedon Road area, the infrastructure and those who lived there, but also about the schools.

We decided that our community stretched from Woodhouse Street to Newtown Buildings, so for now, Ripon Street is not well documented.

I think our greatest challenge is to list every house in the area and who lived there.  We are both extremely busy but believe this project is worth doing and we are up to the challenge.

The success of this venture depends on people passing on their memories to us.
